Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong confirmed during parliamentary hearings on March 11 that the country's embassies in Abu Dhabi and Tel Aviv, as well as its consulate in Dubai, were temporarily closed last week due to security concerns.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing The Guardian, that the decision was made in response to evolving threats in the region.

Minister Wong emphasized that the government's primary priority is the "safety of Australians at home and abroad." She further noted that "Iran's dangerous and destabilizing attacks put the lives of civilians, including Australians, at risk." According to the minister, since the escalation of the Middle East conflict involving strikes between the U.S., Israel, and Iran, more than 3,200 Australians have been repatriated via 23 organized flights. At the start of the conflict, approximately 115,000 Australian citizens were estimated to be in the region.

The temporary suspension of diplomatic operations highlights the heightened state of alert for Western missions across the Middle East. Such measures are typically implemented when intelligence suggests a specific or credible threat to diplomatic personnel or facilities. This move follows a broader trend of increased security protocols by international governments as geopolitical volatility continues to impact major diplomatic and commercial hubs in the United Arab Emirates and Israel.
