A 5.3 magnitude earthquake has struck the Mediterranean Sea, according to reports from regional monitoring agencies.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the seismic event was confirmed by Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
Authorities stated that the earthquake occurred in the vicinity of the Datça district, with the epicenter recorded at a depth of 19.87 kilometers. While initial reports focused on the magnitude and location, emergency services in the region remain on alert to evaluate any potential damage or aftershocks that may affect coastal settlements.
The Mediterranean region is known for its complex tectonic structure, situated at the intersection of several major plates, including the African and Eurasian plates. This geological setting frequently results in seismic activity, prompting Turkey and neighboring countries to maintain robust disaster management protocols to ensure public safety and rapid response capabilities.
