Intense heatwaves observed across Germany have led to a significant increase in mortality rates throughout the country.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, a recent report published by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) highlights the severe impact of anomalous temperatures on the general population.
Data indicates that air temperatures in Germany reached record highs toward the end of June. Official statistics reveal that approximately 5,120 people lost their lives due to heat-related causes between the 15th and 26th weeks of the year.
The report emphasizes that the elderly have been disproportionately affected by the extreme weather conditions. An analysis of fatalities recorded up to June 28 shows that 2,950 of those who passed away were individuals aged 85 and older.
Health authorities have issued warnings to citizens, particularly those in high-risk groups, advising them to avoid prolonged exposure to the outdoors during peak heat hours and to implement necessary protective measures. Heatwaves are becoming an increasingly frequent challenge in Europe due to climate change, prompting health ministries across the continent to enhance public awareness campaigns and emergency response protocols during summer months.
