The United States is ceasing its participation in international agreements and initiatives that undermine the country's national interests. Operative Information Center-OMM reports that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced this position on his X social media account.
The diplomat's statement comes amid Washington's withdrawal from the Paris Agreement on climate change. Rubio noted that the document in question leads to price increases in the US, slows economic growth, and weakens the country's national security. He emphasized that the administration's priority remains the protection of American sovereignty and the promotion of domestic industrial interests.
The Paris Agreement was adopted on December 12, 2015, at the 21st conference of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. During his first presidential term, US President Donald Trump officially withdrew the country from the agreement on November 4, 2019. After starting his second term in January 2025, US President Donald Trump signed a corresponding decree to once again withdraw the country from the accord. This move aligns with the administration's broader policy of reviewing multilateral commitments to ensure they do not place an undue burden on the American economy or energy sector.
