A US Navy destroyer, the USS Benfold, experienced a complete loss of electrical power while operating in the South China Sea last month, according to reports.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the incident has drawn attention to the operational challenges faced by naval forces in the region.

Commander Matthew Comer, a spokesperson for the US Navy's 7th Fleet, confirmed that the USS Benfold suffered a significant generator failure on July 24. The technical malfunction resulted in a total blackout across the vessel, disrupting essential shipboard systems.

According to the official statement, the crew faced severe hardships for several days, including the loss of air conditioning, limited access to potable water, and disruptions to food preparation and sanitation facilities. Despite the difficult conditions, the Navy confirmed that no personnel were injured during the incident.

The vessel was eventually towed to a port in the Philippines, where power was restored on July 30. Following repairs, the destroyer resumed its operational duties one week later.

The South China Sea remains a critical area for international maritime operations, serving as a vital trade route and a focal point for naval presence. The USS Benfold, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, is frequently deployed in the Indo-Pacific region to support US maritime security objectives and freedom of navigation operations.
