A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines, resulting in at least 12 fatalities and leaving over 200 people injured, according to the latest reports.

The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the seismic activity, centered on the island of Mindanao, has caused significant structural damage to schools, hospitals, and residential buildings. Authorities have also issued warnings regarding a tsunami, with waves reaching up to one meter in height observed along nearby coastlines.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos has ordered the suspension of classes in affected areas of Mindanao to ensure public safety. Police and emergency response teams have been mobilized to conduct search and rescue operations and to assess the full extent of the damage. The Philippines is located along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a region known for frequent seismic and volcanic activity, making the archipelago particularly vulnerable to large-scale earthquakes.
