Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced new personnel appointments within the country's security sector, signaling a strategic shift in leadership.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the head of state announced during a briefing that Rustem Umerov has been appointed as the head of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine. Furthermore, Igor Klimenko, who previously served as the Minister of Internal Affairs, has been appointed as the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), succeeding Umerov in the role.
President Zelenskyy emphasized that Klimenko's extensive experience within the Ministry of Internal Affairs will contribute significantly to strengthening the operational capacity of the NSDC. According to the President, the primary objectives for the new leadership include improving coordination among defense agencies, enhancing countermeasures against cyberattacks orchestrated by Russia, and increasing the efficiency of operations against criminal networks. Rustem Umerov, who previously led Ukraine's negotiation team, brings a complex background to his new intelligence role, having faced scrutiny during his tenure as Defense Minister regarding procurement processes.
The National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine serves as the coordinating body for national security and defense matters under the President.
