Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi arrived in South Korea on May 19 for a high-level summit with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung.
The Operative Information Center-OMM, citing Yonhap, reports that the meeting is being held in Andong, the president's hometown. This visit is seen as a strategic move to bolster diplomatic and economic ties between the two neighboring nations.
According to official reports, the discussions will cover a wide range of regional and global issues, including bilateral relations, the security situation regarding North Korea, and ongoing developments in the Middle East. Security measures for the visit have been significantly tightened, with approximately 170 police officers and 40 patrol vehicles deployed to ensure the safety of the Japanese delegation at the airport and surrounding areas.
Japanese government officials noted that economic security is a key priority on the agenda. Specifically, the leaders will focus on establishing resilient and sustainable supply chains for critical minerals, which are essential for high-tech industries in both countries. Furthermore, the leaders are expected to exchange views on the recent meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which took place in Beijing last week.
Following the formal talks, Prime Minister Takaichi and President Lee are scheduled to issue a joint press statement and attend a gala dinner. Relations between Tokyo and Seoul have seen increased diplomatic momentum recently as both nations seek to align their security strategies in the face of evolving regional challenges. This summit underscores the importance of cooperation in maintaining stability across the Indo-Pacific region. The Japanese Prime Minister is expected to return to Japan on the morning of May 20.
