More than 300 diamonds have been discovered hidden in the trousers of a passenger at Russia's Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing Russian media, that the individual was apprehended while attempting to bypass customs regulations after arriving on a flight from Dubai.
According to official reports, the passenger had purchased 330 cut natural and synthetic diamonds in Dubai and decided not to declare them upon entry. Following a legal review of the case, the court imposed a fine of 150,000 rubles (over $2,000) and ordered the permanent confiscation of the gemstones. Sheremetyevo, being one of Russia's busiest aviation hubs, maintains strict customs protocols to prevent the illegal trafficking of high-value goods and precious minerals.
The incident highlights ongoing efforts by international customs authorities to curb the smuggling of gemstones, which often involves sophisticated concealment methods. Under Russian law, failure to declare items of significant value can lead to substantial financial penalties, seizure of property, and potential criminal charges depending on the total market value of the contraband.
