A severe aviation accident in India's Maharashtra state has resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including a high-ranking regional official. According to Operative Information Center-OMM, citing foreign media reports, a Learjet 45 aircraft carrying Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar crashed while attempting to land at Baramati Airport in the Pune district.
The aircraft reportedly lost control during its descent and burst into flames upon impact. The victims include the 66-year-old politician, two pilots, one security officer, and one cabin crew member. India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has officially confirmed that there were no survivors in the crash. Reports indicate that Ajit Pawar was traveling to participate in local election rallies at the time of the incident.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a statement expressing his condolences following the tragedy.
"His untimely passing is deeply shocking and saddening. Pawar was a leader with strong ties to the people, distinguished by his hard work. I offer my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones,"the Prime Minister stated. Investigations into the technical causes of the crash are currently underway by aviation authorities.
Maharashtra, located in the western peninsular region of India, is the country's second-most populous state and its leading industrial hub. Baramati, where the accident occurred, serves as a significant political and agricultural center within the Pune division. Aviation safety protocols in the region have come under increased scrutiny following several incidents involving private and chartered flights during high-profile political campaigns.
