Construction has commenced on the "Zangezur" transmission line, a strategic project designed to connect the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic with the main power system of Azerbaijan and establish the Azerbaijan–Türkiye–Europe international energy corridor.
According to information provided by AzerEnerji OJSC to the Operative Information Center-OMM, following the instructions of President Ilham Aliyev, high-voltage 330-kilovolt (kV) double-circuit transmission lines with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts are being built. The project involves a 74-kilometer section stretching from Jabrayil toward Aghband, and a parallel 105-kilometer section from Nakhchivan to the Ordubad border.
The transmission line, which runs along the Araz River and through several mountainous and rocky terrains, is being constructed under extremely complex relief and harsh climatic conditions. AzerEnerji OJSC is implementing the project in accordance with high technical standards. The next phase of the project envisions the construction of an additional 44-kilometer transmission line across the Zangezur corridor, which will eventually connect the lines being built in the directions of Aghband and Ordubad. Furthermore, a new 330 kV substation is planned for Nakhchivan, for which 49 hectares of land have already been allocated and mobilization work has begun.
As a continuation of the Azerbaijan–Türkiye–Europe energy corridor, another strategic stage is on the agenda. This includes the construction of a 400 kV transmission line spanning 230 kilometers from Nakhchivan to Türkiye and the building of a converter substation—the first of its kind in Azerbaijan's history to operate at the 400 kV voltage class. This initiative will not only ensure Nakhchivan's full integration into the national energy grid and eliminate its dependence on foreign countries for frequency regulation but also expand Azerbaijan's access to European energy markets.
The Zangezur corridor is a significant geopolitical and economic project for Azerbaijan, aimed at restoring direct transport and energy links between the country's main territory and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. By establishing this infrastructure, Azerbaijan strengthens its position as a regional energy hub, facilitating the export of electricity generated from both traditional and renewable sources to Western markets via Türkiye.
