Türkiye is preparing to execute a lunar mission as part of its national space program. Mehmet Fatih Kacir, the Minister of Industry and Technology, announced that the lunar vehicle, developed entirely with national capabilities, is scheduled to be launched into space in the early months of 2027.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the minister shared these details during his speech at the 28th TÜBİTAK Sky Observation Event held in Afyonkarahisar. Kacir emphasized that space and space technologies are among the key strategic pillars of Türkiye's "National Technology Initiative."
Mehmet Fatih Kacir stated that Turkish engineers and scientists are currently working on a lunar vehicle equipped with a hybrid propulsion system. He confirmed that development and testing phases are proceeding according to schedule, with the mission launch targeted for early 2027.
The minister described this project as a significant milestone in Türkiye's advancement in space technologies. The lunar mission is considered vital for the country's deep space exploration ambitions and the expansion of its independent space capabilities.
Kacir highlighted that establishing independent access to space remains a primary strategic objective. In this pursuit, organizations and companies such as ROKETSAN, TÜBİTAK SAGE, and Delta V are collaborating on various projects. Türkiye is also advancing its technological capabilities to launch national satellites using its own rockets, with a strong focus on developing launch infrastructure and rocket technology domestically.
Furthermore, Türkiye is working on a spaceport project in Somalia to enhance its independent access to space. This initiative is designed to allow the country to launch its own space vehicles using its national infrastructure in the future. Additionally, Ankara aims to participate in the production of technological components for international space stations and expand cooperation in space research.
Kacir also noted that Antalya will host the 77th International Astronautical Congress (IAC 2026). The event is expected to bring together scientists, engineers, space industry representatives, and astronauts from around the world. The minister mentioned that the adoption of the "Antalya Declaration" is planned during the congress, which will focus on the peaceful use of space, security, and international cooperation.
