New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has objected to a map shared by US President Donald Trump that labeled the state “New America” instead of “New Mexico.”
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Grisham made the remarks in a post on the X platform.
The governor alleged that Trump was attempting to divert attention from the war in Iran and rising oil prices through the move. She stressed that New Mexico’s name was not up for debate and had been in use even before the United States was established.
Grisham said Americans were spending more on groceries while access to health care was declining.
“While the White House wastes its time coloring on maps, New Mexico is busy doing its job,” the governor said.
Former US Interior Secretary Deb Haaland also criticized Trump’s post. In a post on X, she said she would defend New Mexico’s name and shared a video recorded at a campaign event.
In the video, Haaland recalled that Trump wanted to rename New Mexico “New America” and said she did not support the initiative.
Earlier, Donald Trump shared a map in which the word “Mexico” in the name of the US state of New Mexico had been crossed out and replaced with “America.” In another post, surrounding areas, including Canada, Mexico and Greenland, were depicted as US territory.
New Mexico, a southwestern US state bordering Mexico, has used its current name since before US statehood. The state’s name reflects its historical and geographic ties to the broader region known as New Mexico.
