US President Donald Trump has ordered the imposition of a 100% tariff on drug imports, citing threats to the national security of the United States.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing foreign media, that the president has signed a corresponding executive order to implement these measures.

According to the official statement, the new duties will not apply to generic drugs or their active components. Furthermore, preferential rates have been established for strategic partners: imports from Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and European Union member states will face a reduced tariff of 15%. For the United Kingdom, the rate is set at 10%, following a recently signed bilateral agreement in the pharmaceutical sector. The tariffs are scheduled to take effect on July 31 for large corporations and September 29 for smaller enterprises.

This move is part of a broader strategy by the US administration to reduce dependency on foreign supply chains and bolster domestic manufacturing capabilities within the healthcare sector. By prioritizing national security, the administration aims to ensure the stability of the pharmaceutical market and protect the country from potential supply disruptions. Such economic measures are frequently utilized by the US President Donald Trump to encourage local production and negotiate more favorable trade terms with international partners.
