The United States is set to expand its cooperation with Azerbaijan in the field of humanitarian demining. This commitment is outlined in the Strategic Partnership Charter signed today by President Ilham Aliyev and US Vice President JD Vance.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the charter emphasizes the serious challenges Azerbaijan faces due to landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) contamination. "The document envisages cooperation in increasing Azerbaijan's potential in the field of humanitarian demining through financial support and technology provision, taking into account the serious challenges Azerbaijan faces in connection with the contamination of its territories with mines and unexploded ordnance," the text of the Charter states.
Azerbaijan remains one of the most landmine-contaminated countries globally, particularly in its liberated territories. The government in Baku has prioritized humanitarian demining as a critical prerequisite for the safe return of internally displaced persons and the large-scale reconstruction of the Garabagh region. International partnerships, such as this agreement with Washington under the administration of US President Donald Trump, are essential for accelerating the clearance of hundreds of thousands of mines laid across the region to ensure regional safety and development.
