The United States Senate will not support any attempt by US President Donald Trump to withdraw the country from NATO.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Chuck Schumer, the leader of the Democrats in the Senate, made this statement regarding potential shifts in American foreign policy.
Writing on his X social media page, the Senator stated: "I can promise this. The Senate will not vote to exit NATO and abandon our allies." Schumer further expressed gratitude to Senator Marco Rubio for supporting a 2023 legislative measure that requires a two-thirds majority in the Senate to approve any presidential attempt to leave the alliance, ensuring that the executive branch cannot act unilaterally on this matter.
The initiative in question effectively prohibits the US President from withdrawing the country from NATO without explicit Congressional approval. This legislation was passed by both chambers of Congress in December 2023 and subsequently signed into law by Joe Biden. The legal framework was established following previous criticisms from US President Donald Trump, who has frequently scrutinized European allies and previously characterized NATO as a "paper tiger."
NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, has served as the cornerstone of Transatlantic security since its founding in 1949. For Azerbaijan, maintaining stable relations with the alliance remains a key component of its foreign policy, particularly through the Partnership for Peace program. As the geopolitical landscape shifts, the legal safeguards within the US Congress aim to provide continuity and predictability for international partners relying on the collective defense mechanisms of the alliance.
