Russia and Armenia are set to discuss specific issues regarding the development of trade and economic relations, according to recent statements from the Kremlin.
As reported by the Operative Information Center-OMM, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov informed journalists that the recent meeting in Bishkek between the leaders of Russia and Armenia involved significant and substantive discussions.
Peskov noted that a key topic for upcoming high-level negotiations will likely involve Armenia's future development trajectory and the potential for a referendum on the matter. The Kremlin spokesperson added that the precise timing of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's visit to Russia will be coordinated through diplomatic channels, taking into account the schedules of both heads of state.
During the September 1 meeting in Bishkek, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested that the Armenian leadership should allow its citizens to choose between integration with the European Union (EU) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). In response, Pashinyan recalled that the Armenian parliament passed legislation last year initiating the process for EU membership, which he argued effectively supersedes the need for a referendum.
President Putin expressed disagreement with this interpretation, suggesting that the adoption of such legislation could be viewed as an intention by Armenia to withdraw from the EAEU, emphasizing the necessity of basing final decisions on the will of the people.
The relationship between Russia and Armenia has faced increased scrutiny as Yerevan explores deeper ties with Western institutions. The Eurasian Economic Union, led by Russia, remains a central pillar of Moscow's regional economic integration strategy, while Armenia's recent legislative moves toward the European Union have introduced new complexities into the bilateral dialogue.
