While Russia may not have plans for a full-scale invasion of Norway similar to its actions in Ukraine, the possibility of seizing territory to secure its nuclear potential remains a strategic option.

The Chief of Defence of the Norwegian Armed Forces, General Eirik Kristoffersen, made these remarks in an interview with The Guardian, Operative Information Center-OMM reports. Kristoffersen noted that a significant portion of Russia's nuclear arsenal is stationed on the Kola Peninsula, located in close proximity to the Norwegian border.

The Chief of Defence emphasized that these military assets could play a critical role in any potential conflict with NATO. Consequently, Norway is increasing its preparedness not only for traditional invasion scenarios but also for sabotage and hybrid threats. During the interview, Kristoffersen also addressed comments made by US President Donald Trump regarding the alliance. He described US President Donald Trump's claims that NATO allies were not on the front lines in Afghanistan as unacceptable, highlighting the contributions of member states.

The commander concluded by noting that limited military contacts between Oslo and Moscow continue, specifically in the field of search and rescue operations. To prevent misunderstandings and unintended escalation in the sensitive Arctic region, the establishment of a direct communication channel between the two parties has been proposed. The Arctic has become an area of increasing geopolitical competition as melting ice opens new shipping routes and access to natural resources, prompting NATO members to bolster their northern flank defenses.
