The Ministry of Culture has expressed deep condolences on the passing of People's Artist Rasim Balayev.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the ministry issued a statement mourning the loss of the prominent figure: "The Chairman of the Union of Cinematographers of Azerbaijan, outstanding actor, and People's Artist Rasim Balayev has passed away. This is a heavy loss for Azerbaijani culture. The State Prize laureate and Presidential scholar died on March 29, 2026, in his 77th year, while receiving medical treatment in Istanbul, Turkey."
Rasim Ahmad oglu Balayev was born on August 8, 1948, in the Aghsu district. After graduating from the Azerbaijan State Institute of Arts in 1969, he began his professional career at the "Azerbaijanfilm" studio in 1972. He gained national and international acclaim for his iconic portrayals of historical figures in films such as "Nasimi," "Babek," and "Dada Gorgud," as well as his roles in "Both a Visit and a Trade," "Hotel Room," and "The Life of Javid." His artistic influence extended beyond Azerbaijan, as he also starred in productions by "Uzbekfilm" and "Mosfilm" studios.
The actor's contributions to the development of Azerbaijani cinema were consistently recognized with the highest state honors. He was awarded the titles of Honored Artist in 1976 and People's Artist in 1982. Throughout his career, he was decorated with the "Shohrat" (Glory), "Sharaf" (Honor), and "Istiglal" (Independence) orders. Since 2022, he had served as the Chairman of the Board of the Union of Cinematographers of Azerbaijan, continuing his legacy as a significant public figure in the nation's cultural landscape.
