Security in the Strait of Hormuz: South Korea joins multilateral meeting

South Korea will participate in a multilateral online meeting aimed at ensuring security and stabilizing the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the Yonhap News Agency released information regarding this participation.

The meeting is a follow-up to a consultation held under the auspices of the United Kingdom earlier this month to discuss security options in the strait following the conclusion of active hostilities. Military experts from 40 countries participated in that initial consultation.

South Korea will be represented at the upcoming meeting by Deputy Foreign Minister Chung Eui-hye. The negotiations will be conducted under the joint leadership of the United Kingdom and France.

US-Iran conflict and ceasefire: Regional developments

It should be recalled that the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran on February 28. As a result, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several high-ranking officials were killed.

Following these events, Iran began launching strikes against targets in Israel, as well as in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain, Iraq, and Cyprus, where military bases of the US and its allies are located.

Following the escalation, Iran, the United States, and their allies reached an agreement for a two-week ceasefire starting on the night of April 8, 2026.

Islamabad talks conclude without agreement

On April 11-12, negotiations between Iran and the United States were held in Islamabad with the mediation of Pakistan. Despite hours of discussions, the talks concluded without reaching a formal agreement.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most vital maritime chokepoints, through which approximately one-fifth of the world's oil consumption passes. Ensuring the safety of navigation in these waters is considered a priority for global energy security and international trade stability. Under the administration of US President Donald Trump, the United States has emphasized the importance of multilateral cooperation to maintain freedom of navigation in the region.
