Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares has announced that he will seek solidarity from European Union partners in response to a surge of illegal migration toward the North African city of Ceuta.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing international media reports, the issue is scheduled to be discussed at an upcoming meeting involving the European Commission and the interior ministers of the 27 EU member states.
Minister Albares alleged that international reactionary forces are acting in a coordinated manner to exacerbate the situation, spreading misinformation regarding the Schengen zone. He emphasized that Morocco has been cooperating with Spain since the onset of the crisis. The situation follows a significant incident on July 30, when authorities intercepted over 800 illegal migrants attempting to swim from the Moroccan city of Fnideq to Ceuta. Official reports indicate that the death toll among those attempting to cross from Morocco to Spain has reached 88.
