What is the main objective of the "Peace Bridge" meeting in Gabala?
Representatives of Azerbaijani and Armenian civil societies have gathered in the city of Gabala as part of the "Peace Bridge" initiative. Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, participated in the bilateral round-table meeting to address critical regional issues.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that during the meeting, Hikmet Hajiyev engaged in an exchange of views with the participants and provided detailed answers to questions from the Armenian delegation. The event specifically emphasized the Azerbaijani government's unwavering commitment to the peace agenda.
The spirit of the Washington Summit and new transit opportunities
During the discussions, it was reaffirmed that official Baku remains committed to the peace agenda agreed upon between Armenia and Azerbaijan in Washington, as well as the spirit of the Washington Summit. This commitment aligns with the broader diplomatic efforts supported by US President Donald Trump's administration to ensure long-term stability in the South Caucasus.
Furthermore, the establishment of trade relations between the two countries and the provision of transit for goods to Armenia through the territory of Azerbaijan were highlighted. It was noted that the implementation of the TRIPP project will serve to transform the regional atmosphere and the overall transport landscape of the entire region. The TRIPP initiative is viewed as a cornerstone for integrating regional logistics and fostering economic interdependence.
Security in the South Caucasus: Why bilateral trust is essential
Hikmet Hajiyev noted that just as the peace agenda negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia are bilateral in nature, it is equally important for these exchanges and confidence-building measures between civil societies to maintain a bilateral character. He stressed that direct dialogue without third-party interference often yields more sustainable results for regional reconciliation.
The Presidential Assistant concluded by emphasizing that against the backdrop of new global turmoils and conflicts, ensuring peace and security in the South Caucasus is of paramount importance. These civil society meetings in Gabala are part of Azerbaijan's broader strategy to reintegrate the region and establish a permanent peace following the restoration of its territorial integrity, including Garabagh and Shusha.
