Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov held a meeting with Pia Kauma, President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, who is currently visiting Azerbaijan. According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) reported that the discussions covered cooperation between Azerbaijan and the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, security challenges within the OSCE region, and the ongoing peace agenda between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov emphasized the importance Azerbaijan places on its partnership with the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, noting that inter-parliamentary dialogue plays a crucial role in fostering mutual understanding and trust. The discussion highlighted the active involvement of the Milli Majlis (National Assembly) of Azerbaijan within the OSCE PA framework and the positive impact of high-level exchanges.
During the talks, the Foreign Minister provided an update on Azerbaijan's efforts to ensure regional peace and stability, detailing the progress made in normalizing relations with Armenia. A significant portion of the discussion addressed post-conflict humanitarian issues, with Minister Jeyhun Bayramov stressing that landmine contamination remains a severe threat. He noted that these mines not only endanger lives but also obstruct reconstruction efforts in the liberated territories, hinder the return of internally displaced persons, and impede regional development. Furthermore, he highlighted the critical humanitarian necessity of determining the fate of nearly 4,000 missing Azerbaijani citizens.
The meeting also touched upon broader strategic topics, including Azerbaijan's contribution to international energy security. As a reliable partner, Azerbaijan continues to play a pivotal role in diversifying Europe's energy sources and routes, while also advancing initiatives in the green energy sector. The parties discussed the development of transport corridors, specifically the Middle Corridor, and the significance of opening regional communications for economic stability. Additionally, the conversation addressed the evolving strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and Central Asian nations, noting that the transformation of the C5 format into a C6 framework offers new avenues for cooperation.
The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly serves as a key platform for dialogue among the parliaments of the 57 participating states of the OSCE. It plays a vital role in promoting parliamentary diplomacy, observing elections, and addressing security and human rights issues across the Euro-Atlantic and Eurasian regions. Azerbaijan has been a member of the OSCE since 1992, engaging in various cooperation programs aimed at democratic development and regional security.
