UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has dismissed suggestions that a new peace council, proposed by US President Donald Trump, could pose a competitive threat to the UN Security Council. Guterres emphasized that the United Nations remains a central pillar of international diplomacy despite ongoing geopolitical tensions.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing international media reports, the Secretary-General addressed these concerns while discussing the ongoing humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Reflecting on the UN's role in the region, Guterres stated, "If we look at what is happening in Gaza, the measures taken, and the progress achieved, let us be honest: the UN should not be worried about its own future. It is others who should be worried about what they have done."
The Secretary-General further warned that the current complex international environment risks driving the world toward increased confrontation. The UN Security Council, established in 1945, remains the primary body responsible for maintaining international peace and security, a mandate that Guterres continues to defend amidst calls for institutional reform and the emergence of alternative diplomatic frameworks.
