A court in Baku has issued a decision to extend the detention period for members of a group consisting of Russian citizens who were previously detained in Azerbaijan.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the relevant motions were considered at the Khatai District Court. Lawyer Cavad Cavadli stated in a comment to APA that during today's court proceedings, the detention period for each member of the group was extended by an additional three months.
According to the lawyer, an appeal will be filed against the court's decision regarding the Russian citizen he represents. The individuals in question were originally detained during a special operation conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) targeting the transit and circulation of narcotics from Iran, as well as large-scale cyber fraud activities. On July 1 of last year, the Sabail District Court initially ordered a four-month pretrial detention for the suspects, which was subsequently extended by three months by the Khatai District Court on October 28.
In recent years, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Azerbaijan has intensified its efforts against transnational organized crime, particularly focusing on the illegal drug trade originating from regional transit routes. These operations are part of Azerbaijan's broader strategy to combat cybercrime and narcotics trafficking, often involving cooperation with international law enforcement agencies to secure the country's borders and digital infrastructure. The judicial process in such cases typically involves multiple stages of review to ensure compliance with the Republic of Azerbaijan's criminal procedural legislation.
