The upcoming 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) represents a significant milestone not only for Azerbaijan but for the global urban planning community as a whole. In the coming days, Baku will serve as a meeting point for governments, international organizations, financial institutions, academic circles, civil society, youth, women, the private sector, and local communities.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that these views were expressed by Anar Guliyev, Chairman of the State Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture and national coordinator of WUF13, during a press conference held within the framework of the forum. Guliyev stated that the primary goal uniting all participants is the formation of a better urban future for everyone.
The committee chairman noted that Azerbaijan's journey toward WUF13 began many years ago. According to him, national urban forums have been organized in Azerbaijan since 2021, serving to establish a broad public dialogue on sustainable urban development. "These forums have allowed various stakeholders to come together and discuss the future of our settlements. At the same time, they have played a crucial role in strengthening national coordination, identifying priorities, exchanging experience, and aligning our policies with the New Urban Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals," the chairman emphasized.
The World Urban Forum, established by the United Nations in 2001, is the premier global conference on sustainable urbanization. Hosting WUF13 in Baku is a logical continuation of the international dialogue and cooperation Azerbaijan has pursued in recent years. The event highlights the trust placed in Azerbaijan by the international community and UN-Habitat. For Azerbaijan, WUF13 is more than just an international event; it is a reflection of the country's national priorities and vision for the future, including large-scale projects for city modernization, green infrastructure expansion, and the development of "smart" and inclusive communities.
