A significant majority of Germans, approximately 65 percent, now consider the United States to be one of the greatest threats to world peace.

The Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing foreign media outlets, that a recent study conducted by the Allensbach Institute indicates a sharp shift in German public opinion regarding global security dynamics. The survey highlights that most Germans perceive the US as a primary risk factor to international stability in the coming years.

The poll, conducted in January with 1,077 participants, found that 65 percent of respondents ranked the United States among the countries posing the highest risk to global peace. This figure represents a dramatic increase from previous years, rising from 46 percent a year ago and just 24 percent in 2024. Furthermore, the data reveals a crisis of confidence in transatlantic security; only 32 percent of Germans believe that US President Donald Trump and his administration would provide military assistance if a NATO ally in Europe were attacked. Meanwhile, 35 percent expressed doubt in such support, and 33 percent remained undecided.

This shift in sentiment comes amid evolving geopolitical tensions and debates over the future of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). While Russia is still viewed as a threat by 81 percent of respondents and China by 46 percent, the rapid rise in skepticism toward Washington reflects a growing desire for European strategic autonomy. Historically, Germany has been a cornerstone of the US-led security architecture in Europe, but recent policy shifts under US President Donald Trump have prompted renewed discussions in Berlin regarding the reliability of traditional alliances and the necessity of independent defense capabilities within the European Union.
