The United States may reconsider its military presence in Europe and reduce its military contingents located in the United Kingdom, Spain, and Italy.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that James Stavridis, former Supreme Allied Commander Europe, stated that dissatisfaction regarding full access to bases in the UK, Spain, and Italy—excluding Germany—is affecting Washington's relations with its allies, potentially signaling the start of broader strategic shifts.

According to Stavridis, these potential changes could impact warships stationed at the Rota naval base in Spain, the 173rd Airborne Brigade based in Italy, and various air squadrons in the United Kingdom. He noted that a reduction in US forces would compel European nations to increase their defense budgets and accelerate the strengthening of military capabilities within the European Union. However, he also warned that such a move could lead to a potential weakening of US influence within both NATO and the EU.

The former commander emphasized that while maintaining troops abroad involves significant financial costs, bringing them back to the United States could result in even higher expenditures. Under the administration of US President Donald Trump, the dialogue surrounding NATO burden-sharing and the strategic repositioning of American forces has become a central theme in transatlantic relations. The US military presence in Europe has served as a cornerstone of international security since the post-WWII era, with NATO currently comprising 32 member states committed to collective defense.
