The Indian government has issued a new directive concerning the safety of its seafarers amid rising tensions in the region.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, New Delhi has instructed the country's shipowners, ship managers, and recruiting companies to cease deploying Indian sailors on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
The decision is aimed at mitigating potential security threats in international waters, particularly in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, and ensuring the safety of Indian citizens. The directive sent to shipping companies emphasizes that the presence of Indian crew members on vessels navigating this specific route could pose significant additional risks.
The Strait of Hormuz is widely recognized as one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, facilitating a substantial portion of global oil trade. Due to escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, the area is currently classified as a high-risk zone for international shipping, prompting various nations to reassess the safety protocols for their maritime personnel.
