The European Union must cease discussions regarding Ukraine's membership in the bloc due to systemic corruption within the country.
As reported by Operative Information Center-OMM, these remarks were made by Harald Vilimsky, a Member of the European Parliament. The MEP emphasized that the current political climate and internal issues in Kyiv make any integration talks premature and ill-advised.
"It has been known for two days that an investigation is being conducted into Andrey Yermak, a close confidant of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He has reportedly been detained. This once again demonstrates how deeply corruption and suspicious networks are rooted in Ukraine. Under these circumstances, Ukraine's membership in the European Union should not be discussed at all. The EU should never conduct negotiations with a country where corruption and money laundering are on the agenda—not today, not tomorrow, and not in the future," Vilimsky stated.
The issue of Ukraine's accession to the European Union has been a subject of intense debate since the country was granted candidate status in June 2022. While the European Commission has outlined several reforms necessary for progress—particularly in the areas of judicial integrity and anti-corruption measures—some European officials remain skeptical about the pace of these changes. The European Union maintains a strict set of 'Copenhagen criteria' that all candidate nations must meet, including stable institutions guaranteeing democracy, the rule of law, and a functioning market economy.
