Chinese President Xi Jinping has warned that any mismanagement of the Taiwan issue could lead to a direct confrontation between China and the United States. Speaking during discussions with US President Donald Trump, the Chinese leader underscored the sensitivity of the matter in the context of bilateral relations.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing Chinese Central Television, Xi Jinping described the Taiwan issue as the most critical element in China-US relations. "The Taiwan issue is the most important issue in China-US relations. If it is handled correctly, the relations between the two countries will be able to maintain stability. Otherwise, the two countries will clash and even enter into conflict," the Chinese President stated. He further noted that aspirations for the island's independence are incompatible with maintaining peace and stability in the region.
The relationship between Washington and Beijing has faced significant strain in recent years over trade, technology, and territorial disputes. The United States maintains a "One China" policy but continues to provide defensive support to Taiwan, a stance that Beijing views as interference in its internal affairs. This latest warning comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions as both nations navigate a complex diplomatic landscape under the current US administration.
