Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has addressed reports concerning an alleged drone strike by Ukrainian forces on an Iranian merchant vessel in the Caspian Sea.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Peskov made the remarks during a press briefing with journalists, emphasizing that Tehran possesses the necessary capabilities to protect its national interests and rights in response to the incident.
"Iran has all the necessary potential to take its own steps and defend its state interests regarding this situation," Peskov stated. The Kremlin official's comments follow circulating reports alleging that Ukrainian military assets targeted an Iranian commercial ship in the Caspian region, a development that has drawn international attention to maritime security in the area.
The Caspian Sea, a critical geopolitical waterway bordering Azerbaijan, Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan, is vital for regional trade and energy logistics.
