Iran has issued a stern warning to Ukraine following a recent incident in the Caspian Sea involving a drone strike on a merchant vessel.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Iranian officials reported that the attack, which occurred on Saturday, resulted in the death of an Iranian sailor.
Tehran has emphasized that the targeted vessel was a purely civilian cargo ship with no military purpose. Iran's Ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, condemned the incident as a "criminal act," noting that the vessel was struck while navigating within Russian territorial waters.
The Iranian MFA and other official bodies have declared the attack a violation of international law and the UN Charter. During discussions with European Union and Russian officials, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi stated that the incident would not remain unanswered. Furthermore, the Iranian Embassy in Poland has reportedly sent an official warning to the Ukrainian leadership, accusing Kyiv of attempting to draw Europe and NATO into a military confrontation with Iran.
The incident has drawn regional concern, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan labeling the attack unacceptable. Ashgabat emphasized that the Caspian Sea must remain a "sea of peace, harmony, and good neighborliness," warning that such military interventions pose a significant threat to regional security. The Caspian Sea, a critical geopolitical waterway bordering Azerbaijan, Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan, has historically been a zone of cooperation, making such escalations a matter of serious concern for the littoral states.
