The Azerbaijan national football team has officially emerged as the winner of the "FIFA Series – 2026" international tournament following its final match.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the national squad faced off against the Sierra Leone team in the decisive encounter.
The match, held at the Mehdi Huseynzade Stadium in Sumgait, ended in a 1:1 draw during regulation time. The winner was subsequently determined by a penalty shootout, where the Azerbaijani team demonstrated superior precision, winning 9:8 to claim the international trophy. Sierra Leone finished the tournament in second place.
In their opening match of the series, Azerbaijan delivered a dominant performance by defeating Saint Lucia with a convincing 6:1 scoreline. The "FIFA Series" is a pilot project by world football's governing body aimed at supporting member associations by organizing international friendly matches between teams from different confederations, providing them with essential competitive experience outside of their traditional regional qualifiers.
