French President Emmanuel Macron delivered a firm message regarding relations with US President Donald Trump during an extraordinary European Union summit held in Brussels in January.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, which cited reports from The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and high-ranking officials present at the summit, Macron emphasized that Europe can no longer remain overly dependent on the United States for its security. He declared that a new political course is inevitable, stating, "We are drawing the line. There is no turning back."
This shift in rhetoric marks a significant departure from previous diplomatic efforts, where European nations attempted to maintain stable relations with the US administration through concessions and softer language. Analysts and European officials view the January summit as a potential turning point in transatlantic relations, noting the increasing challenges of navigating the unpredictable nature of the current US administration's policies.
